UPI Payment Failed but Money Deducted? Refund Steps, Timelines and Compensation (2026)

Last updated: October 2026. This guide is general information, not legal or financial advice. Rules and app menus change, so confirm details with your bank, your UPI app, NPCI and RBI.

Introduction: Don’t Panic, Your Money Is Usually Protected

You scan a QR code or send money to a friend. The app says payment failed, but your bank SMS says the amount was debited. This is one of the most common UPI problems, and in most cases the money comes back automatically.

This guide explains why it happens, what to do in the first 30 minutes, how long a refund should take, how to complain, and when you can ask for ₹100 per day compensation under RBI’s rules.

Quick Answer

  • Do not pay again straight away. You may end up paying twice.
  • Check the status in your UPI app history and in your bank statement.
  • Wait for the auto-reversal. Many failed payments reverse within minutes to a few hours.
  • Know the deadlines: for a UPI transfer to a person where the receiver is not credited, the reversal is due by T+1 (the day after the transaction). For merchant payments, banks commonly quote T+5.
  • Compensation: if the bank misses the deadline, RBI’s framework provides ₹100 for each day of delay.
  • Complain in this order: UPI app, then your bank, then NPCI, then the RBI Ombudsman.

Why Does UPI Money Get Deducted When a Payment Fails?

A UPI payment passes through your app, your bank, NPCI’s UPI system and the receiver’s bank. Your bank may debit the money first. If a later step times out or declines, the payment shows as failed and the debit has to be reversed.

  • Your internet connection dropped while the payment was being confirmed.
  • The receiver’s bank server was slow or down.
  • The payment timed out between two banks.
  • Heavy traffic at peak times, such as festival sales or salary days.
  • A technical error at the merchant or payment gateway.
  • Bank maintenance windows.

If you enter a wrong PIN or your balance is too low, the payment is normally declined before any money is debited.

What Each Payment Status Means

Status you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Success, but receiver says not receivedYour bank confirmed the payment; the receiver’s bank or app may be delayedShare the 12-digit UPI reference number with the receiver and ask them to check with their bank. Do not pay again until they confirm.
Pending or processingThe transaction is still being confirmed between banksWait 30 to 60 minutes and check again. Do not retry.
Failed, money debitedThe debit happened but the credit did notNote the transaction details and wait for auto-reversal. Complain if it is not reversed by the deadline.
Failed, money not debitedThe payment was declined before the debitNothing is lost. Confirm in your statement, then retry.
Reversed or refund initiatedThe money is on its way back to your accountWait for the credit entry in your statement.

What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

  1. Stop and do not retry. Paying again can create a second debit.
  2. Check your bank SMS or statement to confirm whether the amount was really debited.
  3. Open the transaction in your UPI app and note the status, date, time, amount and the 12-digit UPI reference number.
  4. Take screenshots of the failed screen, the bank SMS and the transaction details.
  5. Wait 30 to 60 minutes, then check again. Many reversals complete in this window.
  6. If it is still not reversed after a day, raise a complaint in the app.

Refund Timelines and Compensation

RBI issued a framework in September 2019 on turnaround time (TAT) and customer compensation for failed transactions. Treat the deadlines below as the maximum time allowed, not the normal time. Most reversals happen much faster.

SituationReversal deadlineCompensation if late
UPI transfer to a person: your account is debited, receiver is not creditedT+1 (the day after the transaction)₹100 for each day of delay
Merchant payment: account debited but payment not confirmedT+5, as quoted by banks under the RBI framework₹100 for each day of delay
Money sent to the wrong UPI ID or personNo automatic refund, because the payment was successfulNone. You must request help, and recovery depends on the receiver’s cooperation
Payment stuck as pending for a long timeUsually settles to success or failure quickly; if it fails after a debit, the deadlines above applyAs above

Note: banks may count days differently, for example working days only. Ask your bank how it counts T+1 and T+5. Compensation is meant to be credited without a separate claim, but if it does not arrive, ask for it in writing.

Three Real-Life Examples

Example 1: Sending ₹2,500 to a friend

On Monday you send ₹2,500 to a friend. Your account is debited, your friend is not credited and the app shows failed. A few hours later the money has not returned. The reversal deadline is Tuesday (T+1). If the money is still missing from Wednesday, ask your bank for the refund and ₹100 for each day of delay.

Example 2: Paying ₹1,200 at a shop

You pay a shopkeeper ₹1,200. Your phone shows failed, the shop shows nothing received and your bank shows a debit. This is a merchant payment, so the commonly quoted deadline is T+5. Ask the shop to check their app, raise a complaint from your UPI app and keep your screenshots. Pay again only after you are sure the first debit has been reversed or the shop confirms it did not receive the money.

Example 3: Typing a wrong UPI ID

You mistype one digit of a mobile number and send ₹5,000 to a stranger. The payment is successful, so there is no automatic reversal. Contact your bank immediately, raise a complaint in your UPI app and, if you can reach the receiver, ask politely for the money back. Banks can help start a dispute, but recovery is not guaranteed. Always check the name shown on screen before you press pay.

How to Raise a UPI Complaint, Step by Step

Step 1: Complain in your UPI app

Menu names differ between apps, but the route is similar:

  1. Open your UPI app and go to transaction history.
  2. Open the failed transaction.
  3. Tap Help, Report an issue or Raise dispute.
  4. Choose the reason, such as money debited but transaction failed.
  5. Submit and save the complaint reference number.

Step 2: Contact your bank

If nothing happens by the deadline, contact your bank through customer care, a branch or its grievance channel. Give the UPI reference number and say clearly that the money was debited, the transaction failed, and you want the reversal and any compensation due under RBI’s failed-transaction framework.

Step 3: Escalate to NPCI

If your bank does not resolve it, use the UPI dispute redressal option on the NPCI website.

Step 4: Approach the RBI Ombudsman

If the problem is still unresolved, you can file a complaint through the RBI Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. You should normally have complained to your bank first and waited the period RBI allows, so check the current conditions on the portal.

LevelWhere to complainWhen to use it
1UPI app (transaction history)Immediately, when the payment fails and the money is debited
2Your bankIf the refund or compensation is not credited by the deadline
3NPCI UPI dispute redressalIf the bank does not resolve the complaint
4RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in)If it is still unresolved after the earlier levels

Sample Complaint Message

You can copy and edit this when you write to your bank:

Subject: UPI transaction failed, money debited. Request for reversal and compensation.

Dear Sir or Madam, on [date] at [time] I made a UPI payment of ₹[amount] to [receiver or merchant]. The app showed the transaction as failed, but my account ending [last 4 digits] was debited. UPI reference number: [12-digit number]. Complaint reference number: [number]. Please reverse the amount and pay any compensation due under RBI’s turnaround-time framework for failed transactions. Regards, [your name and registered mobile number].

Beware of Refund Scams

  • Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or card details with anyone who says they will process a refund. Banks, UPI apps and NPCI do not need your PIN.
  • Entering a PIN is only for sending money, never for receiving it. If someone asks you to enter a PIN to receive a refund, it is a scam.
  • Do not search for customer care numbers on Google or social media. Fake numbers are common. Use the number inside the app or on your bank’s official website.
  • Do not install screen-sharing apps at a stranger’s request.

How to Reduce UPI Payment Failures

  • Use a stable internet connection and keep your UPI app updated.
  • Check the receiver name on screen before you pay.
  • Do not press pay repeatedly. Wait for the final status.
  • Keep a second UPI app or payment method for emergencies.
  • Be aware of your bank’s daily UPI limit.
  • If many payments are failing, wait. A bank-side outage is likely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a failed UPI refund take?

Often a few minutes to a few hours. The maximum limits are T+1 for transfers to a person and T+5 for merchant payments. If it takes longer, complain.

Can I really get ₹100 per day?

Under RBI’s failed-transaction framework, banks must pay ₹100 for each day of delay after the deadline. If it is not credited automatically, ask your bank for it in writing.

Is a complaint free?

Yes. Raising a complaint through your UPI app, your bank, NPCI or the RBI portal does not cost anything.

What if the payment is pending for several days?

Raise a complaint in your UPI app, save the reference number and follow up with your bank. Use the escalation levels above if it is not resolved.

Can I cancel a UPI payment after it is successful?

No. A successful payment cannot be cancelled. For a wrong payment, follow Example 3 above.
